I have never read the Native Son, so I had no idea what to expect. I was blown away. The show is about a black man named Bigger. Who commits many terrible crimes, but these are only brought on by the hardships he faces.
Almost every aspect of the show was amazing. The script was really captivating. The words were harsh but made me listen. They made you feel for stereotypically "bad" characters. Even though the play was set in the 1940s, the topics that it made people think about are still relevant.
The acting was really great. I thought that even though Bigger was the main man in the show, that the women really helped the show move. I also loved both of the Biggers but I thought that sometimes they would start out to serious so there felt like there was no where else to go but I thought they worked really well together.
My favorite parts though were the direction and the technical aspect. Who ever directed this show was really brilliant. Every moment was a picture, and there were so many subulate things that made the show even better. For example having almost the same image close and open the show.
Also, the technical aspect was really just amazing. There were a few mess ups here and the there but really just brilliant. I'm still thinking about the opening scene. I also thought there use of blackouts in places of violent aspects were really brilliant.
Overall, I thought it was a great show and really revealed to truth. Because it really showed a truth on our culture. It displayed this overwhelming stereotype that young African American men are bad people. Though, Bigger did do something that were illegal. This show displayed how these were mostly brought on by society telling him what to be. I think though this message would not have been as well displayed with out the amazing production value.
