"Buying" Music In A Post-Modern Society
Technology goes hand-in-hand with post-modernism in the sense that it plays a huge part in the ideas that post-modernism reflects.
A lot of really cool and unique things have emerged from the post-modernism culture we live in, however one thing is for certain in regards to music: our technologically driven post-mod society has changed our music culture, and in someways not for the better. In my opinion, growing up in this post-mod society w/access to so much technology not only gives us the pleasure of listening to some of our favorite artists whenever we want [which is a positive attribute], but it also negatively allows us to distance ourselves from the connection to the music itself. Just think about it. When [artist of your choice] releases a new album or single you don't really have to wait for your local mom&pop record shop to get in the new release. Besides, that could take days, sometimes even weeks, who would wait that long. It seems crazy for most kids to comprehend now because in this day and age we can get what we want at the click of a button. For example some may have heard that over the past weekend, David Bowie released his new single Sue [Or in a Season of Crime]. This seven minute jazz masterpiece was first aired on BBC radio-Channel 6. Because of the time difference some of people were unable to hear the premier. But "luckily" for us, we had to wait no longer than probably six hours before the track was released on some streaming website. The excitement and thrill of this sort of thing has been muted by our post-modern technological lifestyle.
This system we have developed through using the technology in this post-modern society effects not only the consumers, but also the producers...some would say, even more detrimentally. The plain and simple fact is, as a generation, we are not buying [<key word] as much music as past cultures have. Whether it be a physical copy or a digital download, the quick access to YouTube, Vevo, and many music piracy websites, make it faster and cheaper for consumers to listen to their favorite artists.
This is what it is like to grow up in a Post-modern society controlled by technology.
