Why Do We Have Postmodernism

What is Postmodernism? Postmodernism was a widespread response to the minimalist nature of modernism that occurred mainly in the 1960's. People believed that modernism lacked substance and tried to revive historical aspects of art, literature and architecture among other pieces of culture. But what did postmodernism really accomplish? Many postmodern pieces of art and buildings are a jumble of old styles that seem out of place among the much more composed styles of previous eras. It's not that art and design can't be chaotic, but I don't find the Postmodern style to be aesthetically pleasing. Postmodernism escaped modernism, but I don't like the direction it turned.

Art can be anything that expresses the feeling or message of the artist. However, this doesn't mean that all art is created equal. There is an elegance and straightforwardness to old art that I'm appreciating more and more as I observe postmodern art. Postmodernism tries to be so deep and complex all the time, which seems excessive. Postmodernism is commenting on how hectic and puzzling society is today, but observing the style only confuses me more. I understand that the art and design is a message, but it lacks outward appeal ( to me at least).

  1. I understand your argument and to some extent agree with it. Personally I enjoy art that is straightforward. However I do understand the appeal to postmodern art because of how interpretive it can be. Good job.

  2. I agree with you about how hectic postmodern art can be and I also dislike it. I kind of miss the form of art that is just aesthetically pleasing. Everything has to be so complicated now a days and I don't really think it's a good thing.

  3. I agree. I once saw an art exhibit that featured a mug sitting on a table, and next to it was this huge wall of text saying what represented. And all I could think was "I don't get any of this." It's a mug. That's all there is to it.

  4. I agree with that some art is a little far fetched, but I also think that if someone that created it calls it art then it is

  5. I think you articulated your point very well and I also believe you're not alone on your perspective either. However, I do believe that most people are searching for an immediate answer or feeling when they look at a piece of artwork and the fact that you are puzzled by what you see is exactly what most post-mod artists want. They don't want the "answer" to be so blatant, instead they want the viewer to be forced to think, to question. Post-modernism isn't necessarily centered around the idea of-well..I really hope they "get" this.
