Take alternative music for example. A lot of people listen to alternative music, thinking that they are going against what is supposed to be popular, pop music. I find that since more people are favoring the alternative genre in an attempt to completely be unique, alternative music is becoming increasingly popular. Doesn't this make alternative the new pop? This trend is applicable to many other examples.
As time goes on habits and preferences which were originally outside the box become what is normal. More and more people are gravitating towards what is new and cutting edge but, with all this attention, those original concepts are becoming boring rapidly. With everyone trying to be postmodern, is it still postmodern?
I completely agree! I was actually thinking about this earlier this week. I noticed that so many people listen to alternative music, it is not really alternative music anymore. It has become so popular that is has almost lost its spark. Not that I do not enjoy, it just does not feel different anymore.
