"We are living in a postmodern world," they say, in a awe inspiring and almost fear inspiring tone. "Technology dominates our life. The mass media gushes images and videos and words at you. Who even are you? What is reality? Is virtual reality reality? We lose ourselves in virtual realities and games and let the media suck up our time."
Yes, technology does take up a huge portion of our lives now and yes it bombards us with sounds and visuals but as scary and brainwashing as it may be, this postmodern world is unbelievably amazing. We have access to historical documents and scientific articles. We can keep up with the news nearly as it happens. We can talk to people halfway across the world and keep in touch with close friends and family no matter where they are. And this onslaught of images and videos and GIFs is a part of that web of interactions. Sure we all need face to face human interaction and human touch, but that doesn't negate the great opportunities this postmodern world of ours provides.
We will be influenced by the media, but we are influenced by everything and everyone. Everything that happens in your life influences you.
I think that the mass of information available to us can sometimes act as over-stimulation. This over-stimulation creates a sense of incoherency, and maybe that incoherency makes living a meaningful life more difficult.
