First off, can we agree to just replace post-modernism with PM? I mean if I have type that word one more time, I might scream. Anyway, that's not really what we're here to talk about. Instead, it is my job to write about what it means to be living in a PM society, where style trumps substance and artificiality is king.
Well, the music sucks. There are a few exceptions of course, but most of it is just 3 minutes of special effects rattling inside your skull. I've checked out music from the 80's and 90's, and some of it is simply amazing. Real vocals, unfiltered instruments. It's pretty incredible. To see what I mean, check out "Spirit in the Sky", or "Hooked on a Feeling". I guarantee you'll enjoy it.
Next, the movies. This is where it gets more positive. Call me easily impressed, but I'm a sucker for some bad-a** CGI. It makes for some amazing action scenes. I saw the Godzilla remake recently, and was blown away. I've seen pictures of how the monster used to be portrayed, and there simply is no contest. That thing is so much more awesome now that it's not made out of wire and clay. There are some cases where the special effects are only used to hide a flawed movie underneath (looking at you transformers) but usually it only heightens the immersion.
I used these two examples to show the conflicted feelings I'm having on the subjects. Some aspects of PM life are really cool, and more often than not helpful. But other times it feels like there's an unspoken rule among businesses that if you're not constantly bombarding your customers with ads, they'll forget you exist, while what they should be focusing on is being a better business in the first place. In the end, I think it's all really up to the individual. Only you can choose how you feel.
I agree with you on the music completely. CGI can be amazing sometimes, but I still appreciate a good old CGI-less film that amazes in more subtle ways. Very accurate description of PM in our world today.
ReplyDeleteYeah I completely agree with the music. I hate that all the music that is on the radios is computer inhanced. I prefer the more raw types of music
