The British band Arctic Monkeys, led by smart, brooding frontman Alex Turner, are very popular especially among teenagers. One of their most famous songs is Fluorescent Adolescent, on the album Favourite Worst Nightmare, and I think this song had such great success because so many people recognized themselves in it.
You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your nightdress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything's in order in a black hole
Nothing seems as pretty as the past though
That Bloody Mary's lacking in Tabasco
Remember when you used to be a rascal?
Oh the boy's a slag
The best you ever had
The best you ever had
Is just a memory and those dreams
Weren't as daft as they seem
As daft as they seem
My love when you dream them up…
The song is vague, but seems to describe a girl whose sexuality flourished in adolescence but waned as she got older. I think this story is true for a lot of people both young and old; many adults unhappily compare their youthful sexual exploits to their current lives, and many sexually rampant teenagers fear getting older and losing that freedom.
Here's the song.
Nice post, I like the band, despite the somewhat innappropriately aimed lyrics.
ReplyDeleteI think this is somewhat true. But also teenagers have more and quicker changing hormones that lead to this. But also Sex is something that most people want most of the time, this is just brought on a lot by natural body functions. I'm not saying that everyone is a nymphomaniac. But this want for sex is something i don't think this goes way with age.
