Native Son

Native Son was an extremely powerful and moving play. It's portrayal of black people in America was shocking and made me think about racism in a way that I never had before. It showed how the ridicule that black people faced on a daily basis became engrained into the way that they saw themselves. The main character was mocked even by his own family when he expressed desire to become a pilot. I had never considered how constant bereavement could affect a person's own opinion of himself.
The play's constant shifting between scenes was beautiful. I did not expect the play to flow so well when presented in that manner. It showed how all of the hateful behavior was not just in specific events, but throughout an entire life. Bigger's hate-filled life events bled together because all of his life was hate-filled. I also enjoyed the way Bigger's conscience was portrayed. It gave us access to his mind in a way that was not otherwise possible.
