Rape in Society
On June 4, 1919 the 19th amendment was created giving women the right to vote. 71 years before that in 1848, the first gathering for women’s rights was formed. In 1890, two pro-women’s rights groups came together to create the National American Woman’s Suffrage Association. In 2008, one of the most prominent events in women’s history was Hillary Clinton’s campaign for presidency of the United States. In the end, Hillary Clinton did not become president but she did become an important role in the government today. In her presidential run, Hillary Clinton was not respected as much as she should have been because she was a women. She had similar ideas to our president now but that was overseen because of her gender. Almost 90 years later and women still are not getting all the rights they deserve. Today, women are paid less than men and seen as less than than men. After all these years of women trying to be equal, they still has no equality to men. An issue because of male dominance in society is rape. 50% of women in rape feel that it is their fault, when really it is never the victim’s fault. Why would a victim feel at fault? Because women feel that since they are less than that it could be their fault. Men believe since they have more power in society that they can make women do things against their will and get away with it.
One of the biggest problems for women in society is rape, especially victim blaming. After all these years that women have spent fighting for these rights, rape continuously shuts down these movements by taking part in the overall decrease of how people see women’s power in society. Rape is caused in society because of the inequality of the sexes. Men believe they can do what they want to whomever. 60% of sexual assaults are not reported and about 97% of rapists never go to jail for what they did.
Rape affects women of all ages, from twelve to thirty. 237,868 women are raped each year. 80% of rapes happen to women 30 or younger. 5% happen on a college campus. Being 16 and going off to college in just 2 years scares me. You never know if you will be the next victim. Women are taken advantage of every 2 minutes and most of the times their rapist is someone they know. Many people believe that the victim is at fault, by the way they dressed or if they were under the influence or even if they did want to at first but changed their mind. Victims are never to blame, but most women feel they it is their fault. Rape is not only for the pleasure but the power that men feel. They believe that they can do whatever they want because they are the more dominant gender. Rape makes them feel like they are powerful because they forced their will on to a woman.. Therefore, the inequality in gender roles leads to illegal crime against women.
