Is an Independent Scotland a Good Thing?
The vote for Scottish independence is today, and that has me asking myself, if it is truly wise for Scotland to seek independence. While politically Scotland is a liberal country ruled by a conservative English government, there are other situations that could make breaking off from England unwise. First of these situations is currency. Scotland is currently on the British Pound and they would switch currencies on declaring independence. Currently they have two options; create a new currency, which in this economy is not a great idea; or take up the Euro, which is not in great shape now. Another issue is the oil reserves that Britain currently controls. Scotland is hoping to use that as a way to possibly help there new economy, but Britain doesn't want to give them up. Even if Scotland does gain full control over the oil, the reserves are producing less and less oil. So Scotland would have a weak economy without a strong currency. Economically independence seems like a poor choice. I would suggest something along the lines of making Scotland fairly politically independent, with the power to create its own legislation and decide whether or not to follow certain English laws, solving the political issue, while not creating an economic one. Ending with a prediction, I do not think that they will vote for it. In the end the almighty dollar (or in this case pound) seems more important, and in the future Scotland will push for more reforms.

I think it is really sad, but true, that money has so much to do with the decisions that people make. I agree in that it might not be very economically smart for Scotland in the future, however I believe that Scotland deserves the right to be independent if that is what they decide to do, so I agree that Scotland and Britain should come up with some form of government for Scotland that allows them to negotiate the things they are unhappy about. This would allow for the change that they need, but also the economic safety that is a necessity.
