The Bachelor

The Bachelor has been on the rise to become one of the most successful reality TV show on television. Almost everyone I have known has either seen or heard of the show. This reality show is revolved around a certain man, the bachelor, who is looking for his true love over the course of a six week competition. 25 single women, of all different racial backgrounds, are rounded up and are presented to the eager bachelor who hopes to find the love of his life within the group. Reality shows that are based on finding true love is very common amongst the television world, but no show is like The Bachelor that is summarized as a reality game show. Through the work of the ever so popular game show, 25 women are portrayed as back stabbing, manipulative, ferocious people who not only form to the social idea that young women in their 20’s are desperately looking for the love of their life, but are willing to give up their independence in order to please a man’s needs and grab his attention.

Through this “love finding” competition much jealousy and drama emerges depicting 25 women as bad mouthing back stabbing women all for trying to obtain the “love” of the bachelor. This love is artificial because the women transform themselves to fit the bachelor’s preferences and to win the competition. This rids on the idea that these women have identity and independence because through their actions, they are willing to forfeit their identity and independence to capture the attention of the male bachelor. The women are always are thin, in good physical shape, always have makeup on, a wear very revealing and tight clothes, etc., to get the attention of the handsome bachelor. The contestants do not hesitate when it comes to showing physical affection towards the bachelor. They will do whatever they think will make the bachelor aware of their “love” for him. If he wants to sleep with them, most of the time they do not turn that offer down because they are willing to sacrifice their morals and independence in make him happy and win over his heart.

Short tempered, self-centered and egoistic women are very common on the show. They believe that they are the perfect match for the bachelor even before they meet him for the first time. For example, one girl wore a wedding gown on the first episode because she “knew” that she was the perfect match for him. In order to ensure a rose to move and not be eliminated from the competition, women are often seen talking behind one another back to another women (mostly negative comments) they will make up lies and spread gossip between one another of either one specific woman or a collaboration of women. Women are seen as catty, manipulative and not to be trusted, especially by other women. It presents a stereotype in our society that we raise girls to each other as competitors just for the attention of men.

The Bachelor hides an essentially moral that claims all women in their twenties should be desperately searching for a man to marry. Essentially, all of the contestants are in their 20s and ready to find love, settle down, and start a family. They are not interested in anything else but to find the love of her life. They take shape as the mother/wife stereotype whose job is to reproduce and provide the nourishment to the family and let the male dominant take over the job role so that she can focus on the house and kids. This forces many women in their 20s feel like they need to get married when they still have all of their youth and beauty left in them.

The Bachelor sums up everything that does not define what it means to be a woman. It degrades women and portrays them as a seductress who is willing to give up all of her independence and morals to a male dominant that they want to marry. Women must look like supermodels in order to attract men. A majority of the “love” that women express on this show does not depict what it means to love someone in my opinion. This show is not feminist in any way possible and gives women an ugly reputation.
