Chris Christie plays to the audience's pathos by reminding us that if we think that any of the Republican presidential candidates won't cut spending, there's always Hilary Clinton who will "drown us in debt". The use of imagery with our "drowning" and his establishing of ethos by putting himself above the squabbling of the other candidates is an effective use of rhetoric on Chris Christie's part.
He also builds on his pathos at the end of his speech when he states "Hilary Clinton is coming for your wallet".
