My Invention for Oskar: The Super-Ear

I invented a hearing device for Oskar that automatically tunes out things that Oskar doesn't want or need to hear, and amplifies things that he wants to hear even if they are too far away. The Super-Ear would block Oskar from hearing sad things about his father's death, and prevent him from getting "heavy boots" all the time. Furthermore, Oskar would always be able to hear people saying nice things to each other, helping him view the world as a more positive place. The Super-Ear runs the dialogue through a huge database to cross-reference conversations that have taken place, and instantly determines whether Oskar should hear them or not, delaying conversation by an imperceptible millisecond.

Oskar shows curiosity and ambition throughout the story, and specifically shows his need for a Super-Ear when he is trying to listen to what the psychologist is saying to his mom about their session. Because some things that they are saying may be harmful for Oskar to hear, the Super-Ear would help Oskar only hear what he should hear. Between pages 203 and 207, Oskar hears bits and pieces of the conversation, which only confuses him, making him more sad. The Super-Ear would block out phrases like, "hospitalize my son" and other ominous phrases that will only scare him. Additionally, Oskar always wants to know how people are feeling, and what they are saying, evidenced by his ideas of communicable feelings through colors and his heartbeat speakers. This device would allow him to connect with people by understanding how they are feeling.
