Invention

Throughout Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Oskar deals with many sensory awareness issues. He cannot pick up on social cues well, such as the time he asks for a kiss from an adult. He has constrict views of what defines love, and how people show their love. His sensory perception is a little bit skewed, and because of that he has a hard time understanding the world around him. The invention I created was The Sensory Synthesizer, which takes all types of stimulus; from sounds, smells, touch, and even emotion, and condenses it into an object that Oskar can relate. In this way, Oskar can understand how all the different types of stimulus can be put together to create cohesive and concise thoughts and feelings. Attached to the Synthesizer is a computer that records every single combination of stimulus that the Synthesizer receives. In that way, Oskar can read and further process how he should feel and think in when receiving certain stimulus.

This will help Oskar become more of a "normal" person in society. Oskar struggles with relating to people in normal ways, such as the time that he wanted to beat in Jimmy Snyders' head (146), or the time he attempted to kiss Mrs. Black on the lips (99). I think that Oskar would benefit from this machine because he doesn't know how to feel about his mothers' reaction to his father's death (171), and this could help him understand his mothers' feelings.\
