21 Jump Street and the Ideology of Dumb Jocks

One movie that has recently came out is 21 Jump Street. 21 Jump Street, although being extremely funny plays into the ideology that jocks are dumb, or not "book smart". This is important to discuss because jocks shouldn't think that they have to play into this ideology. Although I believe that this ideology is false in today's society, the importance should still be shared.

One big reason that I disagree with this ideology is that I play sports, and get good grades.Although that now a days grades are more important, and stressed further than 30 years ago, I still think there are places where education isn't stressed enough. However this idea doesn't pertain to me, or even all of OPRFHS. I am required to maintain a certain GPA, and am suspended if I am not taking care of business in the classroom.

In 21 Jump Street Channing Tatum plays a cop named Jenko. In the beginning of the film "In high school...Jenko was the popular jock."(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1232829/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_17)

Knowing this information you can make the conclusion that this movie is playing into the ideology that jocks aren't smart. In the video below at the(:25) second mark this backs up the characteristics they are trying to make Channing Tatum act out.

Therefore, although this ideology isn't the worst one ever, it still is detrimental to the sports community. This is because it is both negative, and embarrassing. One thing that I found in the movie that helps balance out this notion, Is how Jonah Hill, AKA Schmidt helps Channing Tatum, AKA Jenko to a C on his officers exam. The way he is able to do this is because he is the unpopular nerd, or so its portrayed in the movie. Anyway, this movie is a modern example on how athletes are materialized as stupid. All athletes whether you are doing well at school, or not shouldn't feel pressured to stay inside the box of being a "dumb jock". Instead work hard on the field and in the classroom.

  1. This is one of my favorite recent comedies and I completely agree with you that a lot of movies portray athletes as being dumb and only focused on sports. I personally find that playing sports helps me manage time and ultimately do better in school.
