Today in class we had a discussion about feminism, and to be honest the topics we talk about in this class surprise me sometimes. Like if we went to school in the south, or a less liberal place like Oak Park, it would never have been approved that English classes could talk about feminism or racism so openly and with full acceptance. I also heard that first period's discussion was very different from second periods. Ours was relatively calm, and people just expressed their opinions on feminism like we were having any other discussion. But in first period, apparently people got really loud and rowdy in response to this issue.
I personally think people should stop using the word feminist because it gives off a sense that only women should be in control. But this isn't what the word means at all. I think if you asked people "Are you a feminist", not a lot of people would say yes, but if you phrased it instead like "Do you believe in equal opportunities for both genders", many more people would say yes. Feminism is not full of "scary, men hating women" but society makes it out to be like that and gives it a negative connotation, which we should aim to change.
