Gender Equality Discussion

I think it is apparent now that we have a pretty lively class. Our discussion on gender today helped provide a lot of insight (for me at least) on what it means to be a feminist. Feminists are no longer a group to be defined by radicalism and in fact many celebrities now confess that they are feminists. Before, feminism was almost unpopular and women could negatively judged for being a feminist, however now it is the popular opinion to support feminism.

From my observations feminism is on the rise, and I dont think people are trying to put the group in a box, only that it takes time to change the opinions of a society. Still, I like the term gender equality more than feminism. Feminism is a word clearly geared towards women because the root word means "women". Feminism and gender equality have the same meaning but gender equality seems more inclusive.

Still I like this discussion and how we can have so many sides voice their opinion. Let's just work on being able to move past details and focus on the bigger picture.

  1. I like how you addressed the root of the word feminism and belief that as you said, the word feminism is geared towards women. I believe that our society must get passed the fact that the word "feminism" is derived from "feminine" and needs to identify itself as a feminist. If people identify as supporters of gender equality but refuse to call themselves feminists, are they really in support of gender equality? I also agree that we need to stop arguing over details!

  2. Breaking down the roots of the words and analyzing the way society has started to interpret each word was a very interesting take on the issue. It is awful that the word feminism has been perverted to the radical, anti-male meaning that many give it these days, but realistically, your statement over the choice of diction does hold a very valid point.
