Discussions on Gender
The constructions of gender that are present in our society are undoubtedly problematic, and the consequence oppression of these constructions even more so . And so the question becomes why do these stereotypes exist. After the class discussions this week, the answer is clear. The criteria constructed for the way both men and women have to act are essential for the maintenance of our species’ patriarchal society. The way an ideal woman is depicted in our society illustrates them to be delicate and soft-spoken.These attributes of weakness or compliancy ingrained in our women serve only to strengthen the ability for men to maintain power in our society. On the other side of the spectrum, men are accountable for having characteristics of power loving and assertive, giving them the promotion of the power possessors of our species. After the existence and origin of these stereotypes has been revealed, one can see how unequal our society truly is. As well as how much power men must give up before any sense of equality can claim to be established.

I think the best course would be to not look at it as though men are giving up power. We should look at ourselves as though we are one, because in reality, the differences between men and women are primarily (if not only) physical.
