Native Son in my opinion was a great play, and was acted out perfectly. This story was an amazing example of a true story. In American Literature thus far I have learned many ways that others find a story true. knowing that, I wanted to write about a few ways a story becomes true to me.
One way I found Native Son to be a true story was the way the emotions were portrayed. While watching the play you could see the actors emotions plastered across their faces. In my opinion a big way that emotion is shown is through the eyes. An example of this is when Bigger is beginning to realize that he might not have gotten away with the murder of Mary Dalton. In this moment Bigger's eyes are shown wide and frightened, quite the opposite of what his eyes are when running from the cops. When Bigger begins his journey from running away from his life his eyes turn from wide and frightened to insane and paranoid.
Another way that Native Son has fit into my own criteria for a true story is the fact that the conscience was believable. The actor who played Bigger's conscience was amazing and brilliant because of the way that he played as the logical side of Bigger. Bigger's conscience kept him from being captured as long as he was, however it doesn't keep Bigger from actually carrying some of the bad things he has done out. I think that this is a main reason for being a true story because that is how a real conscience effects a person.
In conclusion, there are many ways that a story can appear true to different people. The Native Son play was a great way to compile my own list of things that make a story true to myself.
I agree with the emotional aspects making something true. In a true story a person's emotions are continuously changing and they are always making decisions. I believe that the play portrayed this perfectly and it made the play that much better.
