Postmodernism is hard to explain. If you look it up on Google the definition is "a late 20th century movement in the arts, architecture, and criticism... skeptical interpretations of culture, literature, art, philosophy, history, economics, fiction, and literary criticism." What does that mean to someone who is living in a postmodern world? Personally, I have always lived in a postmodern world, so I guess it would be pretty normal. Lately focusing on our culture now it is very damaged. A great example is how people live their lives to be successful. People are so focused on making a certain amount of money to achieve happiness. They spend their whole lives working to get this money and happiness that they are not really living. High school students are working to get to college, college student to get a job, workers to get a raise or retirement, but when are they ever living. People are working to achieve the next big thing but they aren't stopping for a second just to live. Personally, I think this is what post modernism is in culture. People working to achieve happiness when really they can be happy without all the money.
Great post! I think that is a very interesting interpretation of postmodernism. It is very true that people are always working towards their next goal and never simply appreciating their life. I think that is the core of postmodernism because people are always driven by their expectations of what comes next, which are created by media and perceptions of what seems to be a happy and successful life.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with this, that we have always grown up in a society where there is norm of events that you should follow: school, college, work, wife, kids, retire. Where is the part where you just live?
