Platoon is a war film that is based of the events in Vietnam. The most famous actors in the movie are William Dafoe and Charlie Sheen. The main character is Charlie Sheen, he is young and was just deployed in Vietnam. William Dafoe one of the higher ranking soldiers and is in charge of their platoon. The film shoes how scary war is. This movie, not like other movies, never shows the good times at war. There is no happy ending or any happy scenes in the movie. William Dafoe dies in the movie because of actions of another soldier who had different views towards the Vietnamese. They set up William which resulted in him being shot down in front of Charlie which did major damage him because William was a person he looked up to in the Platoon.
The Movie shows the everyday life for a Platoon. It shows what ambushes are like, and how scary and fast they can happen. The platoon goes through most things that would happen to a platoon. They show them going into a nearby town and how hard it was to tell the Viet Cong from the good people. It also shows all of the trip mines and booby traps, also how dangerous snipers are. The movie especially shows death, many men in the platoon die. Charlie Sheen is one of the only survives.
Based off of Tim O'Briens expectations Platoon is a true war story because the movie shows how evil war is. It shows how war changes you forever, the memories will never fade. Also the movie has no happy endings which is also one of O'Brien criterias. I also believe it is a true story because of how sad it makes you feel when a character dies. The movie shows how hard it would be to continue to live after someone has seen one of their best friends die. I think Platoon is a great movie and worth it to watch. It won best picture in 1986.
