Nothing is True

Postmodernism is a very interesting concept, as it can be used to describe almost anything. From works of art to people to the entire world, all have been labeled as postmodern. As a psychological movement, postmodernism is equally vague. The school of thought centers around the theory that the images presented by media and pop culture have warped our society's sense of truth so much, that it must be assumed that nothing we perceive as reality is actually true. However, if nothing is true, then isn't everything true?

Many people who favor the idea of postmodernism claim this postmodern world is a relatively recent development that has its origins around the end of World War II. Assuming postmodernism is real, this date still can't be correct. The human mind has been responsive to human-created images since humans had the ability to draw. Early women may have tried to match images painted on cave walls. It is certainly true that such influences affected people long before television, although this may have increased with the introduction of screens to our lives. Even so, this doesn't make the present any more postmodern. This is because postmodernism is nothing. As a word to describe a work of art or anything other object, it means nothing. Postmodernism is simply people realizing how much images and human culture affect them, and being frightened by it, which is understandable. However this idea of no truth is ridiculous, because there has never been any tangible truth to human society. Human society itself is a fabrication of the human mind, just like all of our works of culture. So, to argue that we entered a new era because our society was over influenced by human fabrications is like saying a book violently changed tone simply because its author had an influence on it. Therefore, living in a postmodern world is identical to living in a modern world, as we are still personally influenced by our culture, just as we always have been.

  1. In my opinion, you have represented post-modernism better than anyone else on this blog so far. I agree that post-modernism is just an idea that people have, and we can say anything about our society. I'm glad that you wrote this because I share the same feelings.
