Is "Postmodern Art" Art?

Postmodernism is a topic that seems to be constantly ridiculed and praised at the same time. Different people have different opinions on what constitutes as "art." It is impossible to tell someone that their interpretation of something is wrong and that yours is right. Postmodernism is a form of art that goes against the traditional definition of art. But then again, what is the definition of art? I believe that for something to be art it has to take a certain level of skill and creativity. It must also mean something either to the artist or to the person who is viewing the art. I do not think that a piece of paper that was crumpled up and thrown on the ground means anything nor does it take skill to create. I also do not think that a door which has been opened to 45 degrees means anything either. Those types of postmodernism do not fit my criteria of art.

Those two examples, however, are not all of postmodernism. After searching online looking at other versions of postmodern art, I stumbled across a piece called "Love and Art." This particular piece of postmodern art did indeed fit my criteria for art. It was very creative looking and it probably was very hard for the artist to paint. This is why I have decided that I am still unsure if I like and agree with the idea of postmodernism. On one hand it is boring and means nothing, and on the other is this amazing, creative piece of art. You can't really judge something until you know enough about it. I don't think I know enough about postmodern art to judge it quite yet.

  1. peoples conflicting ideas do make it tricky to identify what is truly art, my opinions are pretty scattered.

  2. Hey I like your blog post and where you're coming from. I agree, it's a debatable question and postmodernism as well as art can go many different ways. Interesting to see what people think.

  3. While I agree that not all postmodern art has to be different, I do think that that is the point. I think postmodernism is trying to stretch the conventions of what can be considered art. It may not take a lot of time, but I think a crumpled piece of paper could evoke meaningful discussion. Perhaps the meaning of a crippled up piece of paper is to simply evoke a conversation about what people consider to be art.

  4. I agree with your definition of art and the work of art you chose to analyze is very interesting and nice. I also agree with you that the definitions of postmodern and art can vary depending on a persons perspective.

  5. I share your opinion on this point. There is good and bad postmodern art. I think that postmodernism is centered on contradiction, so its okay to think that some of the art is good and some is bad.
