What does it mean to live in a postmodern world? To live in a postmodern world is to live in a world where nothing is really concrete. I think chemistry (I guess it is good for something) when I think of a postmodern world, and more specifically, the idea of entropy. Entropy is the theory that things always move to a state of more disorder; ice melts, papers fall, dams burst, etc. This definition mainly applies to molecules but I think it fits our society.
I feel that living in a postmodern world is a dichotomy. It is a constant stress between being one thing, and the opposite. For instance, the original purpose of the Internet was to make it easier to contact people in a time of crisis, and although it has evolved to so much more than that, it is still essentially just a way to connect people. We have this powerful network of connections, yet at the same time it just makes everyone more distant from the people around them. We can now 3D print working body parts, that is something that was never even conceived in the past millennium, and we can do it. Living in a postmodern world means looking to the future for the next brilliant invention, yet at the same time in constant fear that said invention will make things worse.
How many times have you seen someone post whatever fun thing they were doing in their Snapchat story? It happens millions of times everyday, yet every time someone pulls out their phone to document something with the intent of sharing it with others they are inserting an element of technology into a situation previously reserved exclusively for humans. Not to mention the fact that the pulling out of one's phone infects other like yawning, or the plague. When in a social setting and someone pulls out a phone I've noticed that often one-by-one others begin to pull out their phones and the conversation that the group was having, or could have potentially had, disintegrates.
Great post, you explained everything in a very poetic way that still expressed your opinion. Loved the word choice and the comparisons. Also a very compelling argument.
ReplyDeleteGreat comparison with entropy. We just have to accept that tomorrow's inventions are inconceivable to us. Even the most basic elements of life are not a sure thing.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The consistent breakthroughs in technology allow us to become more connected with our society. However, in doing this, we lose track of where we actually are, and the environment we are currently in. Technology can be very helpful, but, at the same time, it can cause people to focus less on actual human conversation and interaction.
