As I sat down to write this, I realized I don't really know if I understand what it means to live in a postmodern world. Maybe if I lived in a world that wasn't postmodern than I would know. But I don't.
With google at my fingertips, I began my search. What I came up with actually surprised me. Because I like it. It tells me that postmodernism is being skeptical of basically everything. If I want to say that my dining room table is a chair. then it is. Just because.
I love being skeptical. I love hearing both sides of the story before I choose which one to support. You don't have to follow the tide. Be a lone nut, am I right? I like that I am free to decide in my postmodern world what is okay and what is not. And be able to express my opinion, and have someone argue against me. We live to argue with each other.
I'm not the most artistic person, but I respect everyone's art. If you tell me you made some artwork, it is art, even if it isn't by other people's standards. It's yours. And that's what I feel postmodernism is. Postmodernism is the freedom to decide. You decide what is art, and you decide what things in cultural are real. It's up to you. And that's why I like postmodernism.
Being skeptical is great! It challenges us to question our world and not just go with the flow. In this respect i like postmodernism too also because it encompasses this.
ReplyDeleteI like that you say postmodernism gives the freedom to decide. It's a self-aware movement that opens up a lot of questions about art and culture, but doesn't necessarily give you the answers. Good job!
