If you loook at the tag of your shirt, it most likely says "MADE IN CHINA". And if its not China, then maybe Tawain or Sri Lanka. Its very rare to find products made in America. Why is it that the US, one of the most powerful and wealthiest nations in the world, cannot seem to produce its own goods?
The common countires that produce many of our goods are poor and sometimes underdeveloped. Its been an ongoing issue that many people tend to ignore. Those poor countires are filled with sweatshops, child labor, and harsh environments in general. Maybe producing our goods for those citizens is their only option, but there have been stories in the news about the prodcution of IPhones in China. It has been reported that the workers tried to commit suicide by jumping off the top of the factory. There were so many attempts that eventually, the factory put netting around the top of the building to prevent the desired deaths. Just think about how many of us have IPhones; we are allowing this terrrible treatment to continue because of our consumerism.
It is true that there are companies that produce their goods here in the US, but not many. American Apparel is proudly apart of those companies that choose to go sweatshop free instead of the cheaper international labor. Forever 21 is the opposite. You can get a shirt there for under three dollars in some cases. Yes, it is cheap, but think about the poor little kid who possibly made that. It is worth the few extra dollars to buy a shirt that was produced correctly, with nicer materials. Hopefully, if the international labor decreases, there will also be less
mistreatment of children working in those harsh environments. There are many benefits of producing our goods on our own land. If more companies moved their businesses to the US, there would be job opportunities. In addition, its more efficent, Matt Turnpin, president on Zentech, an American company, said "What used to be done in 50 parts, is done with one part." The previous thought that overseas production being cheaper was just recently proved incorrect. So all in all, the public needs to realize what goes into the products we consume. We are proud to be Americans and we need to be proud of American production.
