Postmodernism

After today's show and tell, I was able to view everyone's perspective on postmodernism. My understanding widened in the sense that I am now able to identify and comprehend postmodern ideas or questions in everyday objects. One example that was presented today was a pencil. At first I was skeptical of the idea that a pencil had the characteristics of postmodernism, but after the explanation, it was clear to me that almost anything could be postmodern. The pencil is used to write ideas, create drawings, and compose literature. It simply has the power to convey one's idea, but it also has an eraser. The eraser's abilities completely contradict the power of the pencil itself, it allows the removal of the person's idea. The pencil is able to to both. The pencil has power to lead to the creation artificial images, movie scripts, anything really. The ideas the pencil can express are what someone wants you to believe as true. But you can never be sure if it is. Even the simplest item can raise many questions about our lives or beliefs. Another great example from today was the Naviance resume. The person who is submitting the resume for colleges to look at is able to choose what represents his or her self. However, this resume only shows the great accomplishments of the person's life, not the flaws or mistakes. The person who the colleges are being presented with is completely different than the person's "true identity". Overall the idea of postmodernism is challenging to completely grasp. Therefore, there is a lot of controversy created by the topic, and I can understand why. The show and tell clearly explained what my classmates believed was postmodern, and it was extremely helpful for me to view the different perspectives that postmodernism can have.

  3. I liked your post a lot. I also agree that anything can be post modern, but I love the example of the pencil. The pencil can create and take away, and it is also weird to think that some of the worlds greatest ideas started with a pencil.
