War is…

War is hell
It's about sisters who never write back
People who never listen
Garden of Evil. Over here, man, every sin's real
In the midst of evil you want to be a good man

War is nasty
Grief, terror, love, longing
They kicked corpses
They cut off thumbs
They make those mountains burn

War is also beauty
You admire the fluid symmetries of troops
metal-fire streaming down from a gunship
The purply orange glow of napalm
The rocket's red glare

War makes you a man
They crawled into tunnels
Walked point and advanced under fire
Destroy the reality of death itself
They endured. They kept humping

War makes you dead
No drama, down and dead
Zapped while zipping
Boom-down
Dead. I mean really

There's a definite moral here
You know Moral?
I don't see no moral
There it is, man
Nam - it truly talks.

  2. Hey I like this poem. Well written and it shows how war has so many different pieces to it whether it's a positive or negative part. You included a variety of reasons and examples of what war is which is important. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I agree with Patrick in the way that I like how you illustrate many of the characteristics that O'Brien states war has. I also like the contrast between the positive and negative qualities of war that you use in your poem, creating an interesting juxtaposition. Nice job!
