War Poem

War is unbelievable
A true war story cannot be believed
The crazy stuff is true
The normal stuff isn’t,
Because the normal stuff is necessary
To make you believe the truly incredible craziness
It’s a question of credibility
And in the end,
Really, there’s nothing much to say about a true war story,
Except maybe “Oh”
There is always that surreal seemingness,
Which makes the hard and exact truth seem untrue,
But which in fact
Represents the hard and exact truth as it seemed
It’s always difficult to separate what happened
From what seemed to happen
In the jungle,
The sounds carry forever
You hear stuff nobody should ever hear
Kind of wacked-out
In the midst of evil
You want to be a good man
You want justice and courtesy
Things you never knew you wanted
Nothing is ever absolutely true

  1. When I looked at your first four lines, I realized we both had the same idea about what our poems are about. I really like how you used imagery to describe what it was like in the jungle.
