What Are Hospitals Really Like?

Postmodernism is a late 20th century style and concept that can describe literature, art, music, movies, and architecture. Often we find ourselves criticizing these works of art without knowing that we are, revealing the misperception of what is reality and what is not reality.

Doctors' work in hospitals are often thought of as stressful, life or death situations. While I do concede that doctor's have important roles and are by no means insignificant to society, people often misperceive their everyday work because of shows like Grey's Anatomy.

For example, in almost every episode of this dramatic TV series, there is some life saving operation or situation that occurs. Characters Derek and Meredith find themselves doing crazy procedures on people, and all though those do occasionally occur, do not happen everyday in reality. Some days for doctors involve the less urgent tasks of reading results of an X-Ray or sitting done and doing paperwork.  This TV show also conveys that doctors that work together are all friends, or even romantically involved with each other, and are good looking. This isn't the case in real life because there are doctors in society that are not so good looking with families outside of the medical field already.

This postmodern piece does reveal the hectic duties of doctors in their professional environment, but I critique the way this show exemplifies their everyday life, deeming them to be in ICU or performing surgery all the time.

  1. I like how you pointed out the exaggerations and misinterpretations presented in shows like Grey's Anatomy. I agree that a lot of common jobs are often twisted to become more exciting or likable by the media. Great job!

  2. I really like how you used a popular piece of pop culture and were able to connect it with postmodernism. I think you did a good job arguing how television shows give us different perceptions how jobs/other ideals are actually like.

  3. Strong argument while also being able to apply to other pieces of pop culture. Good connections between the show and the idea of postmodernism.
