Order vs. Freedom Original Argument

In society today we strive for a balance between systems and people. Individuals are not seen as the main importance in our society, order is. Arthur Miller writes, “It is still impossible for man to organize his social life without repressions, and the balance has yet to be struck between order and freedom.” in his introduction to The Crucible, a play that poses issues in today's communities and societies. A main theme in The Crucible is the struggle between the hierarchy of government and the actuality of the people. A conflict in the story is whether or not to follow the order our government has set or general morals.

In the play girls are accused of witchery in the town of Salem. To save their own names the girls accuse others of being witches. The community is torn between the decision of believing the girls accusations or the accused plea of innocence. The court in the end of the situation believes the girls even though there is doubt. The court decides to hang the accused "witches" because they need to end the madness in the town of Salem, and reestablish order and control. Order is definitely more valued in society today but a counterpoint to that is it has to be. Without the order the court had is The Crucible may not be moral, but it is necessary to  have to establish a power and maintain control over individuals.
With a form of control in any given society it restricts others to be individuals and express their own opinions and values. This occurs because of the given chance that an individual would break the unity and peace and cause disruption among society. For this same reason communism would not succeed. Communism is a form of government that has everyone as equals that work together to form a government. This would be ideal except that people are not the same, and there will be disagreement and loss of order. Hierarchy of government is valued and needed to maintain a system in which people are stable and can be under equal rule.
Arthur Miller was accurate when he said “It is still impossible for man to organize his social life without repressions, and the balance has yet to be struck between order and freedom.” because a healthy system needs a form of control. This concept can be seen in the play The Crucible, communism, and even our own society.
