Diversity in the Film Industry
Last year when the Oscar nominations came out, many were upset with the lack of diversity. While some denied that minorities were underrepresented, the list was composed almost completely of white actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Brie Larson, while leaving out actors like Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, and Will Smith. Not surprisingly, the film industry took this as an advantage to show the world the racism that still exists in Hollywood.
SNL created a clip called "Screen Guild Awards" that shows five white actors being nominated for the "Best Actor" category. As award shows go, each actor is shown in part of the movie they are being nominated for. However, instead of showing how well the actor played a part, SNL makes a point to highlight the black actors in the clip instead of the lead white male. The clip is a parody of the real Oscars, but it is pretty accurate to real life. SNL uses hyperbole as a satirical technique by exaggerating the audience's facial expressions. The black actors reactions to the white actors being recognized for their work is disapproving, and the white actors seem quite uncomfortable.
The clip is a great example of satire because it was made to educate and change, not make fun. The video makes it clear that minorities are not represented enough in the entertainment industry. Satire like this helps bring attention to important issues and makes it easier for people to have conversations about things that make them uncomfortable.
