The song “Neverland” is by an up and coming artist named Abstract. The song tells the story of reality and its play in the lives of many artists that are trying to make a living doing what they love. Neverland has become a place where people can run and escape others that are in reality telling them to go get a real job or focus on something productive instead of letting them do what they love. The song focuses on the feeling of being lost until you are surrounded by people that love and are trying to do the same thing that you are.
The chorus of the song repeats the same lines “Peter Pan, that’s what they call me/ I promise that you’ll never be lonely (x3)/ And ever since that day.” These lines carry the message of the core metaphor of the song, which is that the first person to accept you for an artist and understand what you are trying to do is your “Peter Pan”. The lines all relate back to the theme of loneliness and how it will never happen if you are with your Peter Pan.
The lines “This is who I am, this is what I do/ Outside of Neverland I don’t have a clue/ They call us lost but this is the place where I was found/ Take my hand Wendy we’re home now,” abstract uses a metaphor to describe the feeling of what it feels like to be accepted. Abstract did not physically go to Neverland but the feeling that he has represents the feeling that he hand when he was accepted. These lines also show how the recognition of what makes some people happy is not always going to be as simple as people would like. The lines talk that society thinks that they are lost but really they have found a place to be themselves.
The lines “She said I don’t want to grown up/ I gotta keep my passions alive/ Please say you’ve heard of a place I can fly/ Where nothing’s impossible, that’s where I gotta go,” this metaphor of Neverland is one of the strongest in the song. While the place is never mentioned it is described as a place where she can keep her passions alive and not grow up. Knowing Neverland from the story of Peter Pan, it is a place where you can go and never grow up. The artist relates growing up with losing your passions and if you stay young then you can continue doing what you love. This song is filled with metaphors that show how growing up is not always the best thing and doing what you love may cause you to find a place where you can truly be yourself.
